The collection takes its name from the Eddas, the most important literary sources of Old Norse mythology, written down in the 13th century. Without the Edda poems, there would be no Norse myths as we know them today.

In Norse mythology, Mjölnir was the mighty weapon of Thor, the god of thunder. Its name is often interpreted as “crusher,” “grinder,” “smash,” or even “lightning.” Ancient people believed that whenever Thor swung his hammer, lightning and thunder would follow.

Mjölnir was the most fearsome weapon in the arsenal of the Norse pantheon, crafted to make its wielder unstoppable. Over the centuries, it has been depicted in many forms – as an axe, a club, or a hammer – though the most common is the short-handled hammer, a description that goes back to Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda.

For the Vikings, Thor’s hammer was far more than a weapon: it was a sacred amulet of protection. It was worn and gifted at important moments of life – to bless newborns, at weddings, to honor the dead, or to mark other significant occasions. Archaeological finds confirm this, as Mjölnir-shaped pendants are among the most frequent relics unearthed from the Viking Age.
