The Piranha – not such a “fearsome” predator after all

The piranha belongs to the characin family and is a predatory, scavenging tropical and subtropical freshwater fish. Its natural habitat includes the rivers of South America and their drainage systems. It is not an endangered species.

Although its name alone can evoke fear, these predators are not nearly as terrifying as many believe. Their notoriety comes from their unusual appearance and large teeth, which have led to their portrayal in movies as bloodthirsty beasts attacking and killing humans in groups.
The truth is that although they do live in larger shoals, they do so not to hunt together, but to protect themselves from potential threats. Piranhas are not aggressive killers but omnivores that eat fish, plants, and insects, and as scavengers they play an important ecological role. During the rainy season, water levels in South American rivers can rise by as much as 15 meters, causing mass drowning of both domestic and wild animals. Piranhas help remove these carcasses, maintaining the ecological balance of the waters and preventing turbidity and the spread of disease.
